While distribution companies have always placed a premium on teaching employees how to respond to emergency situations, Black Hills Energy has been going a step further, offering similar training on natural gas fires to firefighters within the communities it serves. "We want to have a familiarity with each other, so we will understand how to work together if or when we do have a call," said Black Hills trainer Arlen Thompson. "We try to make it as realistic as possible." As a volunteer firefighter in his hometown of Louisburg, Kan., Thompson is keenly aware of the importance of such teamwork and cooperation, and the idea is not a new one at Black Hills.
