Most who burn inland oil spills in-situ believe it removes large volumes quickly with few long-term impacts. The practice is used in numerous Midwestern, western and Gulf Coast states, yet little information has been obtained on the effects, and few protocols have been written. Acceptance of in-situ burning for inland spills cleanup probably is more a result of a lack of interest in long-term effects than any serious analysis of the practice.
