BP Exploration Operating Co. Ltd. has successfully used the Clock Spring pipe wrapping system to repair corrosion-related damage to the 110-mi (175-km), 36-in. (0.91-m) Ninian pipe line, which delivers crude oil from the North Sea to a land-based terminal. Operators were alerted to the problem when successive intelligent pig runs revealed an area of external metal loss on the land portion of the line. A number of repair methods were considered, including the composite wrap system, a split-sleeve repair system, and welded repair. Ultimately, the Clock Spring composite-wrap system was selected.
