Microwave NDT of composite pipes is a relatively new technique that still needs further development and optimization. It is appropriate for the in-service inspection of composite pipes for external impact and erosion types of defects. The scanner used in this study is capable of inspecting only straight segments of the pipe. It cannot track fittings and elbows. The sensitivity of the technique is acceptable for thin walled pipes less than or equal to 0.25 in.The results we got so far are very promising and we will continue to tune the technique to improve the sensitivity and speed of this inspection. Future work on developing NDT methods for nonmetallic pipes will concentrate more on the fittings and joints and less on the straight part of the pipe.
