When the functions of the DCS and gauging system were merged on the No. 6 machine at Abitibi-Consolidated's Fort Frances mill, operators gained a wealth of knowledge about the process. The interface is pretty much seamless." The operators of the rebuilt No. 6 machine are enthusiastic about using their new-found ability to manage the functions of both systems through a common console. In this "single window" environment, the complete machine-from stock preparation to final paper quality-can be controlled using simple point-and-click commands.
