A bridge under construction south of Shanghai, China, may not be the longest in the world, but it will come close. In crossing Hangzhou Bay to connect Shanghai and Ningbo, the 36 km long highway bridge will shorten the driving distance between the two cities by 120 km. The Hangzhou Bay Bridge will be the world's longest sea crossing, according to Xinhua, the official Chinese news agency. It will cost 11.8 billion Yuan, or approximately SI.4 billion, to construct. The world's longest bridge, according to the publications of Guinness World Records, is the 38.4 km long Second Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, in Louisiana.
