Shanghai and the densely populated region surround- ing China's Hangzhou Bay form a metropolitan area that has been a cultural and economic center for centuries. The bay itself, however, has always presented a seemingly insurmountable barrier to ground transportation between the cities that line its shores. This summer, with the completion of the 36 km long Hangzhou Bay Bridge- the world's longest sea crossing-that barrier has finally been overcome.
