WiMAX vendors jockey as certification begins

Major vendors including Motorola and Siemens have unveiled a string of WiMAX initiatives following confirmation that the WiMAX Forum launched its certification program for 802.16-2004 fixed WiMAX last month as scheduled. Motorola says it has "expanded [and] accelerated" its WiMAX activities by devoting more R&D and other resources to the technology as part of a "company wide initiative to develop WiMAX and other mobile broadband wireless solutions." One result will be the launch of a new "MOTOWi" WiMAX portfolio, which will include a low-cost platform for rural areas and developing countries, and a carrier-class solution, the company says.
