DP Capability Assessment Tool for Semi-submersible

Today most of the modern deepwater semisubmersible rigs are equipped with DP system. In order to assist in-house basic design teams to carry out initial evaluation of DP capability of a semi-submersible, a DP capability assessment tool is developed. Details on calculation method and optimization algorithm will be discussed in the paper. DP holding capability is assessed on how well the limiting environmental forces can be balanced by the vessel using its propulsion system in an optimal way. A few considerations need to be addressed. A large number of parameters are involved in this particular problem. We use first order optimization algorithm to determine optimization objective function. Several output graphics formats are available. We have also compared our calculated results with that of assessment method used by other designers.
