Long Term Durability of Composite Sleeve Repair, and Application as Permanent Pipeline Repair

Composite Sleeve repair systems like that of Clock Spring~® were the subject of a rigorous Research and Development program conducted under the management and auspices of the Gas Research Institute (GRI). The program extended over a decade and considered long term degradation. Special sections of the program specifically investigated the cathodic disbondment and cathodic shielding effects, as these were considered to be potentially deleterious to the integrity of the repair and by extension to pipeline safety. An extensive field validation program was required by the US Department of Transportation (DOT). This requirement was added to verify the laboratory results and to provide and to validate the real world behavior on actual pipelines. In 1999, this Composite Sleeve system managed to get DOT approval for permanent pipeline repair for high pressure gas transmission line repair. Over two decades of time has passed since the GRI established the first steering committee of industry experts to design the scope and methods of the investigations. Several hundred thousand Composite Sleeve repairs have now been made. This paper is to address various long term durability and recent removal of the Composite Sleeve system and also several case studies of repair applications of Composite Sleeve in Malaysia as a permanent pipeline repair.
