Many recent studies have raised concerns about the potential toxicity of anesthetic agents on the neonatal brain. These data were mainly obtained from animal or invitro studies. Although every practitioner should be aware of this issue, it seems premature to change our current practice. However, the available retrospective human cohorts do not exclude a potential deleterious effect of anesthesia on the human neonatal brain.
