Lightweight self-consolidating concrete (SCC) has the potential to increase transfer length. Twenty-five rectangular concrete members prestressed with two 0.6 in. (15 mm) prestressing strands were cast using SCC made with three different coarse aggregates. The concretes had design compressive strengths of either 4000 and 6000 psi (28 and 41 MPa) or 6000 and 7000 psi (41 and 48 MPa) at release and 28 days, respectively. Transfer lengths were not significantly affected by aggregate type, but higher compressive strength at release resulted in shorter transfer lengths. Average transfer lengths were shorter than predicted by the American Concrete Institute andAmerican Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials codes. Lightweight SCC exhibited very similar performance to normalweight SCC and the code equations.
