Wireless LANs: Learn to Get Along

The adoption of wireless LAN technologies has been hampered by several key factors, including price, speed, range, security, and interoperability. 802.11b is the first wireless LAN protocol to address these problems. Range and speed are fine, especially in well-planned locations. The Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) has tackled security, and the latest products are addressing deployment across the enterprise. Low-price leaders, such as D-Link and Linksys are entering the marketplace, and the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA) has become the compatibility watchdog— though there is still work to be done here.
