Rolls-Royce launches system integration solution

Rolls-Royce has launched a system integration solution for smaller cruise ships that is based on one of four platforms. It has also created a customised model to show the system in more detail. Explaining why the company had developed the system, which was launched at Cruise Shipping Miami in March, Rolls-Royce Marine vice president of innovation, engineering and technology Oskar Levander told Passenger Ship Technology: "The cruise ship industry has not seen system integration as we have in the offshore industry. For smaller cruise ships - anything below 60,000gt - there would be a lot of benefit in going for more of a system approach. We are trying to promote this." He expanded: "The benefit is that you have one company - Rolls-Royce - taking responsibility for everything functioning together. The shipyard has a single point of contact, there is less design work for them, and less risk for the owner. Throughout the vessel's lifetime it will have a single point of contact for service and maintenance and total lifetime care. We have designed a platform where different machinery is readily integrated so the owner can focus on the interior, which is what provides the revenue."
