Export Demand Keeping U.S. Market Tight

Despite sluggish domestic box demand, U.S. con-tainerboard production has been growing due to global export demand, RockTenn's Corrugated and Recycling Division President Jim Porter told attendees at the SuperCorrExpo conference in Atlanta. Porter describes the U.S. market as "very tight" in terms of supply and demand, with mills running at 96-97 percent of capacity, and inventories down to a low 2.1 million tons, or 3.7 weeks of supply, partly because of "pull" from global demand that has kept U.S. virgin mills "stretched" to fill export orders.
