Porter: Export demand keeping US market tight despite slow box recovery

Despite sluggish domestic box demand, US containerboard production has been growing due to global export demand, Rock-Ten n's Corrugated and Recycling Div pres Jim Porter, said at the SuperCorr conference in Atlanta on Monday. Porter described the US market as "very tight" in terms of supply and demand, with mills running at 96-97% of capacity, and inventories down to a low 2.1 million tons or 3.7 weeks of supply, partly because of "pull" from global demand that has kept US virgin mills "stretched" to fill export orders.
