Future development of the forestry and pulp and paper industries in Russia will depend on the competitiveness of the existing pulp and paper companies. Analysis of current assets of pulp and paper sector of Russian forestry industry shows that possibilities for production increase at large pulp and paper mills due to intensive factors are used , completely and that structure of products currently produced by Russian pulp and paper mills does not correspond to all requirements of domestic markets neither provides high effectiveness of their export. In addition, the technological obsoleteness of Russian pulp and paper mills is seen as a high specific consumption of raw material, fuel and energy and unacceptable ecological characteristics of effluents and air emissions. However, because of lower prices on wood raw material, fuel and electric energy as well as lower ecological payments, Russian pulp and paper companies still show profitable business. This provides them with a chance to conduct a sequential modernization of current assets for production of advanced and competitive products.
