Growing opportunities for co-operation

Latin america is competing in many ways with the emerging economies in East and Southeast Asia for international funding and export market share. The region's economies grew at an average rate of 5,5% in 2004, which is clearly faster than forecast. Especially the Brazilian market's strong performance has boosted economic growth in Latin America. According to international analysts, Brazil will rapidly move up from 10th place at present to one of the world's five biggest economic powers. Growth prospects for Latin America's economy are still favourable: an average GNP growth of 4% is forecast for the region's countries this year.
