摘要

Scientists are taking precision engineering to new lengths, zooming in to improve materials and machines using material building-blocks which measure less than 0.1 billionth of a meter. ABB scientists say materials can be re-engineered atom by atom, to offer an explosion in performance that will lead to radical changes in industry and the world around us. The possibilities of their work are startling. Atomic precision could produce metal structures devoid of micro imperfections, dramatically increasing their strength. Aircraft could be about one-fifth their present weight with seemingly impossibly-thin wings. More energy could be extracted from fuel in engines running hotter and at higher revolutions per minute.
