Ceramic Coating for Smearing Problems in Paper-making

Smearing can be a problem in the paper making applications where low loads or sudden variations in load or speed are experienced. Rolling elements slide, the oil film collapses and smearing occurs, a condition where the subsequent metal-to-metal contact leads to severe wear. Downtime is the inevitable result (ideally planned but often unplanned) together with the replacement and maintenance costs for buying and mounting new bearings. SKF has now developed a ceramic material which can solve these problems. SKF has developed the NoWear~R coating; a ceramic material that has very low friction andhigh-hardnesscharacteristics, and an extremely low affinity to bond to other surfaces.
