During pulping and papermaking process, hydrophobic contaminants such as pressure-sensitive, hot melt, coating, ink binding adhesives from recycle paper as well as Iipophilic wood resins from virg in pulp are readily released and dispersed in the furnish. Those hydrophobic contaminants will build up within the pulp line and paper machine, leading to lower production, efficiency and quality. A fluorescence technology was applied for tracking the hydrophobic substances to give a correlated intuitionistic measure. This paper addresses a versatile off-line fluorescence application method, DC-PRO contaminant control technology, to monitor and quantify hydrophobic substances in paper and pulp process. The proactive approach could be applied for system survey, additive screening, and optimise the control programme by combining with Nalco quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) based on-line technology; paper manufacturers could avoid utilising contaminant control programmes in a black-box manner with demonstrated successes at various grades. The described novel and versatile approach could help papermakers in creating and maintaining value (CMV) to improve operating efficiency and ultimately obtain economic & environmental return of investment (eROI~*) at a sustainable and green development model.
