DIGITAL LIBRARY SERVICES OF HIGHER EDUCATION COMMISSION IN PAKISTAN.

Higher Education Commission (HEC) in Pakistan has focused on, to make available the scientific information to the researchers. The purpose of this study was to explore the HEC digital library resources and services provided by the HEC and their usefulness as perceived by the head librarians of universities in Rawaipindi and Islamabad (twin cities). HEC centrally subscribe databases of journals through National Digital Library Programme (NDLP) and provide access to universities. Pakistan Education Research Network (PERN) connects Pakistani universities and research institutes through high-speed Internet bandwidth. HEC has also launched the Pakistan Research Repository (PRR). This initiative has been taken to digitize and make available online every Ph.D. and M. Phil. thesis, produced in Pakistani universities. The Digital Library is now moving forward to the establishment of an open-access online portal for journals. HEC also arranges the research articles not available in National Digital Library through British Library Document Delivery service. These services were considered very useful by head librarians for their users. However, User training, technical support, marketing and promotion are required to increase the use of digital library.
