The simple answer to that question from a technical point of view is: you bet they could. There are already precedents, with the Italian Air Force converting one of their aircraft to carry a palletised 30mm cannon, and the Royal Jordanian Air Force doing the same thing with a similar sized aircraft in a C295. Having said that, there is no indication that Australia will go down that path, so the exercise is an interesting piece of speculation based on the fact that Northrop Grumman - well established in this country - owns several pieces of the puzzle.
