Portable Ultrasound Imaging Cameras

Two types of portable ultrasound imaging cameras in development at Imperium in Silver Spring, Md., will offer the U.S. Navy a new way to inspect composite structures for non-visible damage. One new type of the Acoustocam, a through-transmission ultrasonic camera system, is designed to detect skin-to-core disbonding in thin honeycomb structures like helicopter rotor blades. A simpler pulse-echo version can detect defects such as delamina-tions, disbonds or corrosion in composite laminate and metallic sheet- or plate-like structures when technicians can access only one side of them.
