A Pre-History of the Sino-Japanese War 1894-1895: Introduction and Summary

The naval aspects of the Sino-Japanese War have been dealt with in issues Ⅻ-XIV and this pre-history of the Sino-Japanese War will be completed in forthcoming issues of Contributions to the History of Imperial Japanese Warships. The conflict over Korea between Japan and China in the latter half of the 19th Century was the driving force for the formation of a defensible frontier, a state-supported merchant marine and the creation and expansion of the IJN to a degree that Japan's insufficient national budget permitted - until being just capable of opposing the Chinese Navy, whose expansion suddenly stopped. Due to this background the decisive influence of the Japanese-Chinese relations in the foundation, formation and strengthening periods of the IJN will be dealt with. List of contents: 1.
