The Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) reminds employers of several new labor provisions that became law at the beginning of this year. This law helps clarify the state Labor Code, which requires employers to provide employees who work more than 6 hours in a day with one 30-minute off-duty meal break after 5 hours of work. The new sections will exempt from the requirement workers in construction, commercial drivers, security officers, and utility workers who are covered by a collective bargaining agreement that contains meal period provisions.
