The role of older volunteers in promoting healthy nutrition for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases

It is important for older people to be aware of the components and characteristics of healthy diet, not only in order to improve their way of living but also to help others, among them the younger generations, to adopt a healthier nutrition. Older people in Greece are still able to influence, at least a little, their children and grandchildren towards a healthier lifestyle due to their role in their families, which still resembles the traditional extended model. As a result of the project team and KAPI staff observations, attempts have been made to keep volunteers active, by motivating them to continue with the same activity and/or use them in further related health promotion activities. They have continued to visit KAPIs and present the topic of Healthy Nutrition and they also have presented ideas for expanding their role by visiting schools and instructing young children on the principles of healthy nutrition. The training package, which was produced for the study and consists of two booklets, was sent to the health and the social care staff of all KAPIs nation wide, NHS health centres, Ageing Well UK and Ageing Well Europe. The response of a number of KAPIs to implement it by themselves is a good sign that the project was successful.
