Health promotion: a professional community for social justice

Calderwood (1) has integrated an impressive range of ideas about how professionals link up for social justice. At the core of her construction - a professional community for social justice - is the ideal of the moral community, which has the intention that all are empowered, none are marginalised, none are exploited, and this is achieved by action to overturn injustice. Health promoters constitute a moral; community in this sense, striving for equity in health and the empowerment of all to control their own health. In discussing the meaning of community, Calderwood chooses to emphasise that aspect of community having to do with shared values; we are a community in that sense, persons with a range of professions, sharing the ethic of health promotion, as embodied in the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion. It is in this sense that the term "community" is used in this essay.
