A New Yorker cartoon a few months ago showed a dispirited group of people standing around at a cocktail party—frowns, bored expressions, no conversation at all. The hosts look at each other in dismay, and one says to the other "Oh, lord—we forgot to invite any content providers!" When things like this show up in the mass media, you know you've got a trend on your hands. Suddenly, the big deal in the online industry—and for the investors and the highly-paid consultants who have been flocking to it—is content. To those of us who have been around the online scene for a while, this is not exactly news. We've been content-oriented all our professional lives, selecting databases and online services on the basis of their unique and valuable information.
