Where Have All the OLUGs Gone?

For many years, particularly in the 1980s, the back pages of this magazine regularly listed OLUGs and reported on their activities. OLUG is an acronym (an ancient one by online standards) for On-line User Group, back when the concept of "online" was so new that the term was frequently hyphenated. (Words tend to lose their hyphens when they become popular.) ONLINE magazine, which never hyphenated "online," aided in communication among the early online user groups. Some never embraced the "L" and instead chose names using the OUG (Online User Group) abbreviation.
