Absence Seizures

Absence, or petit mal, seizures can last for 30 seconds or less. Typical symptoms give the perception of daydreaming or staring; however, not all patients demonstrate these symptoms. The "Kids & Seizures: Know the Hidden Signs" brochure by the Epilepsy Foundation (epilepsyfoundation.org/resources/ upload/SignsBroch.pdf) outlines other symptoms to look for, which vary among infant, child, and teenager. In our daughter's case, she has subclinical symptoms, so she appears asymptomatic. While a video EEG displays active seizures on a monitor nearby, she will be speaking and coloring throughout without any indication of abnormal brain activity.
