Elsevier updated its sharing and hosting policies for articles, stating its new policies will make it easier for researchers to share "confidently and easily" on platforms, particularly institutional repositories, while getting appropriate credit. According to Elsevier, the policies aim to ensure that readers can access the best available version of content that is authoritative and complete while observing government funding mandates and Elsevier's embargoes. However, the policies ignited a firestorm in the library community, with organizations around the world denouncing the new policy, saying it actually impedes open access and sharing. COAR's Statement Against Elsevier's Sharing Policies has 170 signatories.
