Knowledge of aircraft infrared signature (IRS) is indispensable for assessing their detection possibilities. By signature, we mean all the quantities for predicting the signal that would be observed by an optronic sensor when the aircraft is in its environment. Until recently, modeling work was oriented toward a good inclusion of the various physical phenomena. For a combat aircraft placed in a given atmospheric environment, the IRS depends on the first order on the spectral range retained, the observation geometry, the aircraft speed, the engine throttle. This type of model is insufficient for evaluating the detection performance of a future optronic system. Several sources of variability lead to a dispersion of the values likely to be observed: weather, aircraft presentation angles, mistaking its various properties, aircraft type.
