If they could pick horses as well as they pick politicians, gasoline marketer groups would not have to go begging for political action committee contributions from their members. A review of congressional races backed by the three main marketer organizations shows a remarkable number of winners. But there is a troubling trend emerging for one of the groups - the amount of money donated to the Petroleum Marketers Assn. of America has steadily declined over the last three election cycles. It has seen a nearly $50,000 drop in donations since 2004. The group has the largest number of members, representing 8,000 marketer firms through its affiliated state associations.
