Wawa has skipped across several counties and will open new stores in Southwest Florida. Sources also say the company hopes to have dozens of sites in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area within a few years and is scouting for real estate in Southeastern counties. Three sites are under construction in the Ft. Myers and Cape Coral area, sources say, in what appears to be a vote of confidence for the company's business plan in the state. The original scope of the Wawa rollout was to focus on site selection in the Orlando and Tampa metro areas, both of which boast plenty of Northeastern transplants familiar with Wawa's brands for food and fuel. The move to Lee County leapfrogs a number of less-populated counties, but the chain could fill in the gaps if the Southwest Florida stores match the success of Orlando/Tampa sites.
