M&A: TA to pursue c-stores; accelerate LNG rollout

TravelCenters of America (TA) entered the U.S. c-store business late last year when it purchased regional chain Minit Marts, and executives indicated that they intend to pursue other sites in convenience retailing, provided the asking prices don't get out of hand. "TA currently intends to continue to selectively acquire additional travel centers and convenience stores and to otherwise expand its business," declared CEO Tom O'Brien, adding that c-stores don't require the same upgrades and capital investments that the company must plow into travel centers. He noted that the decision to move into convenience retailing was a natural one, since TA has huge operating advantages on the fuel side, and operates similarly to a "national jobber." O'Brien also cited advantages in purchasing as well as advantages in distribution thanks to company-managed warehouses.
