Trends: NE states are cutting sulfur from fuel oil

Ahead of a game-changing move for at least three Northeast states to a lower sulfur heating oil on July 1, the market transition is expected to involve some logistical tweaks in product availability and storage tank flushing. However, the sulfur reduction move is not expected to have a significant impact on heating oil supply availability in the Northeast. For 2014, Connecticut and Massachusetts are moving to a maximum of 500 pprn sulfur from 3,000 ppm, and Rhode Island is currently working on a state regulation capping sulfur in heating oil at 500 ppm, said Michael Trunzo, CEO of the New England Fuel Institute.
