Challenges ahead as new motor oil delayed

Los Angeles – The drive to meet higher federal fuel efficiency standards is creating significant challenges for the lubricants industry. Automakers are introducing more light vehicles with gasoline direct injection engines (GDI) and turbocharged GDI (TGDI), which will require an upgrade from the current ILSAC GF-5 standard for motor oil. The process for upgrading the specification takes too long, and the delay could result in a customer relations fiasco, according to Joe Purnhagen, regional marketing manager, Americas, for Lubrizol Additives, who spoke at a workshop on lubricant trends at the recent Pacific Oil Conference.
