In a sign that fuel volumes are recovering from pandemic lows, the fuel retail business at Walmart and its subsidiary Sam's Club lifted overall comparable sales in the February- April quarter versus a year ago. At the same time, the company's fuel margins have sharply narrowed versus stellar profits due to historic demand destruction in the yearago period. Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, also operates one of the nation’s biggest chains of retail fuel sites, with almost 1,000 stations at Sam’s Clubs, Neighborhood Markets and Walmart Supercenters, according to OPIS tallies. In its latest fiscal Q1 2022 ending April 30, total U.S. comparable sales (sales at stores open at least a year) that combined gas station revenues at its Walmart U.S. stores and Sam's Club – the company's membership-only retail warehouse clubs – showed fuel revenues boosted overall same-store sales by 0.7 percentage points.
