Gas stations are still victimized by skimmers at the gaspump, but skimming crime as a whole is on the decline as apotential data breach threat, according to the 2020 VerizonData Breach Investigations Report.Incidents involving skimmers – small electronic devicesthat steal payment card data – are now just 0.7% of databreaches reported and the number of incidents involvingskimmers has declined 85% over the last seven years.“At approximately 30 incidents, it (skimming) is showinga relatively marked decline from its peak of 206 back in2013,” Verizon said, suggesting that attackers may havechanged their tactics.
