'Give us certainty to ensure growth' say leaders

Talk of long-term funding certainty dominated the agenda item at Scottish Renewables' Offshore Wind and Supply Chain Conference at the end of January, as the sector stood poised for the results of contract for difference (CFD) deliberations. As highlighted elsewhere in this issue of OWJ, the government in the UK recently made available £25 million more for the first CFD auction round, adding to the £235 million originally made available for 'less mature technologies', including offshore wind. Prior to the addition of the new funds, the overall sum available was expected to allow for about 800 megawatts of offshore wind power, which could equate to a single large offshore wind project rather than projects. The additional £25 million was welcome but is unlikely to make a significant difference to the number of projects that get the go ahead.
