Chinese yards maintain leading position

On the whole, despite the normally slow contracting activity through the summer holiday months, the offshore sector remains vibrant. Owners are increasingly interested in more versatile designs that can undertake a range of operations in the event of any market downturn. Shipbuilders are eager to up their game and continue to aim for high value contracts. Asian builders continue to gain ground, but Europe is still doing well, led very much by Norway. Having been slow off the blocks China has moved into a leading position for construction of offshore support vessels (OSVs), many of which are destined for Chinese ownership. Competitive advantage is now becoming evident from joint co-operation with overseas designers and equipment companies, especially those in Norway.
