January 2015 will be an important month for Ian Giddings, technical adviser at the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA). After many years as one of the foremost experts on dynamic positioning (DP), he is retiring. Mr Giddings was the specialist we turned to for our 'expert view' in RMM's Complete Guide to DP earlier this year, and he's very much the go-to man who organisers of conferences around the globe - including RMM - have invited to update audiences on numerous occasions on DP activity and challenges. But how did he come to have such a high level of expertise in DP? What is his background? What are his views about the future of DP? And what are his plans for his own future?
