Polar Onyx is an Ulstein SX121 design ordered by GC Rieber Shipping at a cost of US$141 million and chartered to Ceona on a five-year fixture with an option for a further five years. The hull of the vessel was built at Zaliv in Ukraine as is customary for the builder and completed by Ulstein at their Norwegian base. The vessel is a sophisticated ship capable of fulfilling a variety of tasks. Ceona describes it as a high-capacity flexible/umbilical pipelay and subsea construction vessel; GC Rieber opts for the simpler title of 'construction support vessel'. Ceona plans to use Polar Onyx to execute complex subsea construction and pipelay projects in the subsea umbilicals, risers and flowlines (SURF) market, installing flexibles and umbilicals to depths of 3,000m.
