Havyard group has taken a rather different approach to designing its next-generation PSV, and says that it is the result of a 'first principles' approach and 'pre-studies' honing in on where a vessel will operate, and on the conditions it can expect to encounter there. This kind of approach might seem to be a logical one to take, but the company believes it is rarely given the attention it deserves. As Kristian Steinsvik, a senior designer at Havyard Design & Solutions explained, Havyard group's philosophy is to produce designs that are optimised for the conditions they will encounter most of the time. "Our designs will work equally well in harsh conditions too, of course" he told OSJ, "but we have adopted a different way of working. "Firstly, we went back to basics, and obtained in-depth data about conditions in the North Sea. For us, the way we went about designing the new-generation vessel was almost as important as the design itself - we wanted to obtain all of the data we could about conditions in the area in which the vessel would operate, in order to use it as a tool to develop the parameters of the new design."
