Saipem sees success in Caspian and Black Seas

Kashagan in the Kazakh waters of the Caspian Sea is the largest and most complex offshore oil and gas project definitely in this region and arguably worldwide. It has been beset by huge problems, massive delays and immense amounts of offshore contractual work for offshore construction and support vessels. The project is in very shallow water that is covered in ice during winter months and has a reservoir with highly corrosive gases. As previously reported in OSJ, the discovery of cracked pipes and a gas leak in 2013 led to the field's closure, after a brief spell of production. The corrosive gases cracked the pipework and prompted North Caspian Operating Co (NCOC) to order replacements and award new contracts for vessel operators.
