Caterpillar working with Maersk to optimise engines

Caterpillar Marine has been working with Maersk Supply Service on engine technology to improve safety and environmental performance. Together, they are also developing an engine monitoring system to deliver condition-based maintenance on offshore support vessels (OSVs). Maersk ordered enhanced versions of the MaK M 32 E diesel-electric engines and generator sets for a series of four subsea support vessels that it has under construction at Cosco (Dalian) Shipyards. Each vessel will be equipped with four M 32 E gensets with a power output of 4,400kW each and two MaK 8 M 20 C at l,440kW each. The new M 32 E engine solutions have an increased power rating of 550kW per cylinder at revolutions of between 720 and 750 rpm. The total output ranges from 3,300kW for the six-cylinder configuration to 4,950kW for the nine-cylinder configuration.
