A sea change in owner/operator attitudes toward third party ship management is underway and Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) is well placed to capitalise, says CEO Norbert Aschmann. "We see a change in mindset, especially among owners of medium size tonnage, driven by today's market conditions," said Captain Aschmann. "The segment is facing the kind of operational pressures that might be standard in say the bulk carrier market, but have not been a feature in offshore historically." The trend is being boosted by owners looking to operate in remote parts of the world which may lack infrastructure to support them, he explained, adding that the highly fragmented nature of the segment - with its concentration of owners with smaller fleets - also supports the shift. "Quite simply, they lack the scale to leverage meaningful economies of scale."
