While the market in the North Sea was showing positive signs of a recovery during the first half of the year, with improved utilisation and day rates, most owners still retained a degree of pessimism, stating that it would be well into 2011 before the market returns to anywhere near the lucrative times experienced before the onset of the global recession. This pessimism, or realism as some might call it, seems now to be justified as day rates have dropped once again in the initial part of the third quarter. The amount of available term work off the UK and Norway has also decreased, with a lot of the new projects now fully booked with vessels, and some set to come to an end in the coming weeks and months, which can only increase vessel availability.
