Brazil's initiative to drive domestic naval construction is continuing to bear fruit. The aim has been to reduce maritime fleet dependence on the external market, and generate jobs while containing costs and maintaining international quality standards. The Marine Merchant Fund (FMM) of Brazil recently approved USD 227.3 million for Wilson, Sons to build new shipyard facilities; a new yard in the city of Rio Grande, and a significant expansion of its shipyard in the city of Guaruja. These new shipyards will greatly increase Wilson, Sons' capacity to build offshore support and towing vessels. Over the last few years, the FMM has made funding available to several companies to construct OSVs and to build or expand shipyard capacity.
